This
historical study has been prepared in response to
directive by Strategic Air Command Headquarters
located at Offutt AFB, Nebraska. The information
contained herein has been researched from the files
of the Directorate of Information and has been drawn
from the unclassified portions of the 562d Strategic
Aerospace Wing history.
A
detailed and analytical historical document of
significant consequence is not attempted with this
writing; rather, a digest of major events is our
intent.
As one
researches the historical files of Larson Air force
Base, you become impressed again and again with the
significant role that Larson has played in the
development of the United States Air Force.
Larson
Air Force Base is scheduled to be closed on 30 June
1966. With its closing, a chapter in our Nation's
military heritage, that began with the P-38's of
World War II, entered into the Jet Age with the
arrival of the B-52 Stratofortresses and KC-135
Stratotankers and then swept in the Space Age with
the arrival and installation of Titan I
Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles, Larson AFB now
closes after writing a very colorful chapter in the
history of the United States Air Force.
